A short epilogue set in the summer follows. Hallorann has taken a job in Maine , where Wendy is recovering from her injuries and Danny fishes.
Although he misses Jack, Danny accepts Hallorann as a father figure. Hallorann, in turn, assures Danny that he and his mother will be okay.
Together with Wendy, Hallorann watches as Danny reels in a rainbow-coloured fish. King recalled that he and his wife were the only guests staying at the hotel; it was set to close for the winter season the next day.
While exploring its hallways, King thought to himself:. That night I dreamed of my three-year-old son running through the corridors, looking back over his shoulder, eyes wide, screaming.
He was being chased by a fire-hose. I woke up with a tremendous jerk, sweating all over, within an inch of falling out of bed.
King struggled with alcoholism in the early stages of his career. The Shining voices this concern. He wrote novels that, he later explained, he barely remembered writing, including Cujo and The Tommyknockers In the late s, Tabitha King staged an intervention, and King became sober.
King is not known for subtlety in his novels. Yet three of the most important details in The Shining appear before the novel even begins.
The first epigraph is perhaps the most important. In the tale, a fictional medieval prince gives a masquerade ball at his castle.
At midnight, the Red Death—a plague that causes swift, agonizing death—reveals itself among the revelers and kills them all.
Certain images and motifs from the tale are replicated. The colour red, for example, figures prominently in both stories. Danny is haunted by images of blood and brain matter throughout the novel.
There are other similarities between the stories. Here it is worth noting that masks and, especially, unmasking play a particularly important role in both stories.
In The Shining , the main characters conceal their true identities behind metaphorical masks. The second epigraph is shorter than the first but no less important.
In this particular etching , an artist sleeps at his desk while various flying animals—including owls and bats—lurk behind him.
Inside the Overlook Hotel, all three Torrances struggle to distinguish between reality and illusion. Most of the film was shot on a specially constructed set in Hertfordshire, England, in Kubrick reportedly exposed 1.
A typical shooting ratio—comparing the total hours of footage shot with the eventual running time of the film—is or The completed film premiered on May 23, He transformed the bold, resilient Wendy of the novel into a timid, emotionally fragile character.
King disliked the casting of Duvall as Wendy. At the end of the film, Jack and the Overlook freeze; in the novel, the hotel burns in a fiery explosion.
In September , King published Doctor Sleep , a follow-up to The Shining set over 30 years after the events of the first novel.
His mother, Wendy, is dead. She died of lung cancer—possibly caused by ingesting smoke from the explosion of the Overlook—in Like his father did, Dan struggles with alcoholism and anger issues.
In an effort to curb his drinking, Dan attends a few Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Hallorann, who has taken a chef's job at a resort in Maine , comforts Danny over the loss of his father as Wendy recuperates from the injuries Jack inflicted on her.
After writing Carrie and 'Salem's Lot , which are both set in small towns in King's native Maine, King was looking for a change of pace for the next book.
They were the only two guests in the hotel that night. Ten years earlier, King had read Ray Bradbury 's "The Veldt" and was inspired to someday write a story about a person whose dreams would become real.
In , King started a novel entitled Darkshine , which was to be about a psychic boy in a psychic amusement park, but the idea never came to fruition and he abandoned the book.
During the night at the Stanley, this story came back to him. King and his wife had dinner that evening in the grand dining room, totally alone.
They were offered one choice for dinner, the only meal still available. Taped orchestral music played in the room and theirs was the only table set for dining.
So the music is echoing down the hall, and, I mean, it was like God had put me there to hear that and see those things.
And by the time I went to bed that night, I had the whole book in my mind". After dinner, his wife decided to turn in, but King took a walk around the empty hotel.
He ended up in the bar and was served drinks by a bartender named Grady. He was being chased by a fire-hose. I woke up with a tremendous jerk, sweating all over, within an inch of falling out of bed.
I got up, lit a cigarette, sat in a chair looking out the window at the Rockies, and by the time the cigarette was done, I had the bones of the book firmly set in my mind.
Sometimes you confess. You always hide what you're confessing to. That's one of the reasons why you make up the story. When I wrote The Shining , for instance, the protagonist of The Shining is a man who has broken his son's arm, who has a history of child beating, who is beaten himself.
And as a young father with two children, I was horrified by my occasional feelings of real antagonism toward my children.
Won't you ever stop? Won't you ever go to bed? And time has given me the idea that probably there are a lot of young fathers and young mothers both who feel very angry, who have angry feelings toward their children.
But as somebody who has been raised with the idea that father knows best and Ward Cleaver on Leave It to Beaver , and all this stuff, I would think to myself, Oh, if he doesn't shut up, if he doesn't shut up So when I wrote this book I wrote a lot of that down and tried to get it out of my system, but it was also a confession.
Yes, there are times when I felt very angry toward my children and have even felt as though I could hurt them. Well, my kids are older now.
Naomi is fifteen and Joey is thirteen and Owen is eight, and they're all super kids, and I don't think I've laid a hand on one of my kids in probably seven years, but there was a time The first draft of The Shining took less than four months to complete and he was able to publish it before the others.
Bill Thompson, King's editor at Doubleday, tried to talk him out of The Shining because he thought that after writing Carrie and ' Salem's Lot , he would get "typed" as a horror writer.
King considered that a compliment. Originally, there was a prologue titled "Before the Play" that chronicled earlier events in the Overlook's history, as well as an epilogue titled "After the Play", though neither remained part of the published novel.
The epilogue was thought to have been lost, but was re-discovered in as part of an early manuscript version of the novel. On November 19, , during a reading at the Canon Theatre in Toronto , King described to the audience an idea for a sequel to The Shining.
The idea was prompted by the occasional person asking, "Whatever happened to Danny? I mentioned two potential projects while I was on the road, one a new Mid-World book not directly about Roland Deschain, but yes, he and his friend Cuthbert are in it, hunting a skin-man, which are what werewolves are called in that lost kingdom and a sequel to The Shining called Doctor Sleep.
Are you interested in reading either of these? If so, which one turns your dials more? Voting ended on December 31, , and it was revealed that Doctor Sleep received 5, votes, while The Wind Through the Keyhole received 5,

The ghosts also appear to Jack, led by Delbert Grady, the Overlook's former steward who murdered his entire family and killed himself at the hotel's command.
Grady and the other spirits tell Jack that Wendy and Danny are turning against him, and that his only option is to kill them. They also supply him with an open bar, and he begins drinking again.
As Jack's sanity deteriorates, Wendy begins to fear for her and Danny's safety. Hallorann, whom Danny had contacted telepathically, travels from Florida to Colorado, only to be assaulted by Jack with a croquet mallet and left for dead.
Danny telepathically communicates with his father, who momentarily breaks free of the ghosts' grip, and then tells him that the old boiler has been neglected.
Danny, Wendy, and Hallorann who had only been stunned by the attack escape to safety. Jack sacrifices himself to prevent the ghosts from repossessing him and allows the boiler to explode and destroy the Overlook.
Ten years later, Danny graduates from high school, showing that Tony was Danny's adult incarnate self. Wendy and Halloran are present at the ceremony.
Jack's spirit is also present, looking on Danny with pride. Back in Colorado, the Overlook is being rebuilt as a resort for the summer, as the ghosts of the original hotel await potential victims.
Several of Garris' colleagues who work in the horror genre cameo in the miniseries' ballroom scene, such as David J. Schow , Christa Faust , P.
Sam Raimi also briefly appears as a gas station attendant. The creation of this miniseries is attributed to Stephen King's dissatisfaction with director Stanley Kubrick 's film of the same name.
The casting team had a very difficult time finding an actor for the role of Jack Torrance as most of the considerations who rejected the role worried about being compared to Nicholson's performance in the Kubrick version.
Aside from the motive behind the creation of the miniseries, the rendition featured an important set piece that helped to inspire the original story: The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.
King used the hotel that inspired him to write the book as the miniseries' location, with some interior shots in stages also in Denver. The production team began shooting at the Stanley Hotel in March , the date chosen as it was Denver's snowiest month.
Some of the cast enjoyed working on The Shining. Mead "wasn't scared" as he had acted previously in horror films like Hellraiser: Bloodline ; John Durbin enjoyed the "madness" he got to portray with his character of Horace Derwent; and Stanley Anderson , who accepted the part of Delbert Grady based on his disappointment with the Kubrick version, tried to play the character "real" but with "a sense of distance to [his] view of the other and the world, so it comes out as irony or wryness.
The first part of The Shining garnered The Shining opened to overwhelming praise from critics when it aired in , which included a ten-out-of-ten review from TV Guide.
The site's critics consensus reads, "Stephen King's televisual adaption of his own novel is more faithful than its cinematic counterpart, but unfortunately this miniseries is hobbled by a drab literalism of the text and cheesy effects that diminish the scares.
It was also nominated for Outstanding Miniseries but lost to Prime Suspect 5: Errors of Judgement in the category.
